The Model D grand piano was sampled from a Hamburg-made 1939 Steinway D274 grand coda piano. This particular piano has been in use in various venues in Italy and has been played and praised by many top-level international classical and jazz players. This piano’s age definitely guarantees it the vintage moniker, nonetheless it went through proper maintenance and restoration over the years by highly-skilled italian technicians. It totally resonates with all of the great music played through it. We sampled this piece of history in a medium-size hall surrounded by a plethora of microphones.

In PortaMatic you’ll find a collection of analog sounds, sampled from Yamaha PortaSound MK100 and a Wersi Matic CX-1, along with some custom additions. Most of the sounds are dry, while some are processed just a little bit.
If you want to go a little crazy, try playing around with the long spring reverbs we sampled for the Snare Drums 2 group using a classic Roland RV-800 spring reverb. Using the hold and Spring Decay settings creatively, you can make a really cool sounding gated reverb – combine this with individual pitch via Note Edit for an all 80s experience 🙂
PortaMatic is probably best described as “just really analog”, and certainly has a distinct vintage vibe to it.

This means you can set the dynamic range for the need of the moment, thus better emulate some playing styles where certain dynamics are hardly ever touched (think heavy metal vs jazz in regards to the piano or fortissimo dynamics). This also lets you tune the response to any MIDI keyboard with the Velocity Curve knob.
